It was another great day at Monmouth Park on Saturday. Plenty of festivities in the back for everyone, and the racing was once again top notch.

Quality Road Ready For The Metropolitan Mile At Belmont Park
Quality Road will face 7 others when he enters the gate in Monday’s Met Mile (GI) at Belmont Park. Among the field will be Warrior’s Reward, Musket Man, Convocation, and Kensei. Full field below. Currently he is the #1 ranked thoroughbred in the world. Quality Road will look to put on A Quality Road Show & try and break the track record for a mile. Najran has the record for the one-turn mile. He did it in a blistering 1:32.24! That’s fast.

Joey P. Bounces Back To Win—Passes The $1 Million Mark In Career Earnings

The real Joey P. is back—wins race 3 at Aqueduct! Joey P. zipped right to the lead and held off the challenge of Mt Glittermore to record his first win since returning from emergency intestinal surgery last June. Joey P’s last two starts were both lack luster affairs, but today the the real Joey P. showed up with a sharp front-running win. The 8-year-old gelding recorded his 17th career win in 38 career starts and his first ever in New York. The win also put the New Jersey bred over the $1 Million mark in career earnings. The 8-year-old son of Close Up was ready to defend his title in the Charles Town Dash last June, but he had to undergo emergency intestinal surgery preventing him from doing so. He was coming off an impressive win in the JJ Reilly a few weeks earlier and was primed to repeat. Today he cruised through fractions of 22.38 and 46.14 and had plenty left in the stretch as he dug in and fended of the challenge of the 1/2 favorite Mt Glittermore. Joey P. completed the 6 furlongs in 1:11.28 over a sealed track that was rated muddy. Joey P. was ridden by Chuck C. Lopez and is trained by Ben Perkins Jr. **Chart**

Joey P was ready to defend his title in the Charles Town Dash tonight at Charles Town, but he will not be able to do it. He will miss tonight’s big race after undergoing emergency surgery Thursday night…Full DRF Article He was cranked and ready for a big try tonight. Really looked forward to his race. He should make a full recovery and start training with in 60-90 days. Getter better Joey P!

These were taken on May 23, 2009 at Monmouth Park. The day started out with bright sunshine and cool breeze off the ocean. It turned cloudy and a light fog rolled in right before the John J. Reilly Stakes. There was sun in the paddock, but when Joey P. came on the track, the sun was gone. It did not matter much to him, as he rolled home for one of his easiest wins of his career as the clouds rolled in. Get Serious a little later broke a turf course record in winning the Elkwood Stakes at a mile in 1: 32.78. It was another great day at Monmouth Park.

Regally Bred First-Time Starters Ready To Go At Belmont Park In Race 7 On Saturday

The Kentucky Derby has come, and it has gone, but the Haskell Invitational and Travers Stakes are still on the horizon.

Race 7 at Belmont Park could produce an entrant, if not more. Race 7 is a 6 and one half furlong long maiden special weight, and there are some regally bred, very fast working colts ready to go at first asking.

This is as solid a maiden special weight race as you will see anywhere. The race is packed with some very fast working, and regally bred thoroughbreds ready for their debut.

Colors Flying debuts for the Phipps crew. The January foal will be making his first career start, and he has been working very well. He has spent most of the winter down in Florida at Payson Park, and has since shipped north and has posted some very sharp gate works. He is by A.P. Indy and his dam is the champion Storm Flag Flying. He has posted 12 works in all, and a lot of them have been fast. This one will generate interest, and looks ready for a solid first time try.

Shadwell also has a fast working firster in Istisharry. A $1 Million dollar purchase out of the hot first time sire Distorted Humor and the dam is by Seattle Slew. He has posted some very fast a.m. drills at Palm Meadows, before shipping north, and continued to drill fast in New York. He looks like he is ready to go. This outfit likes to score first out, and Kiaran McLaughlin has been hot.

Of this talented group of well-bred firsters, Gridiron has had some of the most impressive works of them all, and in this field, that is saying a lot. A $100,000 purchase, he has been drilling lights out for John Terranova and Sovereign Stables. He shows some very fast works, and that fast 59 gate work on April 19, 2009 is a serious work. He spent the winter drilling at Palm Meadows. A son of the hot Giant’s Causeway, he looks like another one, who is ready for a big effort at first asking tomorrow.

On a side note, of the ones who have raced in here, also command respect. Winged Hero and Intrepid ran strongly in their first career starts. Wanted Alive will be making his third career start, and his last race was a sharp try at Aqueduct, where he was in the same race with Intrepid.

This is a deep, talented field assembled for this maiden special weight at Belmont Park tomorrow. Juddmonte Farm’s home-bred Action Plan, a son of Empire Maker is another horse, who has had a strong 6-furlong work in preparation for this one. Action Plan will break from post position one.

Hoopoe is another one with nice breezes who will debut for Nick Zito.

Allen Jerkens and Tom Albertrani also have first time starters ready for their first race this afternoon.

Late bloomers on the 3-year-old scene, but nonetheless, bloomers ready to strut their stuff in a very competitive, and solid race maiden special weight who could very well make some noise later this summer.

Monmouth Park features the John J. Reilly handicap for New Jersey Breds today, with Who’s The Cowboy and Joey P. heading the field. And the Elkwood Stakes featuring two old war horses, Icy Atlantic and Silver Tree, in a very competitive renewal of that one.

Today is really the first real solid day of racing at Aqueduct. Two graded stakes and temps set to be in the mid to upper 60’s. The number 7 horse in the ThoroughbredZones’s Derby 12 Mr. Fantasy will see his first class test since he has been on the track. ThoroughbredZone has been following this one from day one, and have yet to see him asked for his best, today he very well might have to be asked for something. It is a tough race with a couple new shooters from Cali and Shug’s Imperial Council. Alan Garcia comes up from Florida to ride Mr. Fantasy. Horse has a nice easy running style. We will see how he handles the class test. Haynesfield the number 12 horse in the Derby 12 also gets his first class test. Making a pick in here is not the easiest of tasks, will spread with a few in pick bets, but I do feel good about Mr. Fantasy running a nice one. Mr. Fantasy could be another one ready for a breakout effort today.

The Toboggan features one of my all-time favorite horses, Jersey bred Joey P. The hard knocking 7 year old will be gunning for win number 16 and his first in New York. Another tough field, but if Joey P. brings his A game, will be there as usual late.

The 11-year-old Tour Of The Cat is back again, making his 5th start of 2009. He is coming off a win last out at Laurel. He goes in Race 10 in a $7,500 claimer. I’ll be rooting for the old warrior!
