Two champions ended their superb racing careers with victories over the weekend. Kodiak Kowboy capped his superb racing career with a win in the Cigar Mile (GI) at Aqueduct. Kodiak Kowboy has been one of the most reliable and winning sprinters in the country over the past couple of years. The fantastic Ventura ended her stellar career in winning one for the late, great Bobby Frankel in taking the Matriarch (GI) at Hollywood Park on Saturday. Both of these thoroughbreds were champions who displayed brilliance on the track. I for one will miss both of them. Ventura was one of my favorites, with her late explosive kick. She was always there. She was all class.
The perfect Zenyatta ran her last race in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Her victory was one of the most dramatic and thrilling wins in racing history. She gave us chills and thrills on and off the track. Zenyatta was honored this past Sunday at Hollywood Park. She galloped on the track and was then brought into the winner’s circle, where Mike Smith jumped on her. She might have thought it was go time again! Zenyatta is one of the most graceful and majestic horses I have ever seen. She has a presence about her that is overwhelming. She is perfect.
We can only hope that their progeny will go on to continue their legacy of being champions.
