If the Thoroughbred Safety Committee gets their wish, calks or mud calks, also known as toe grabs and/or stickers would be banned in the US thoroughbred racing soon. The committee put together soon after the Kentucky Derby to help make racing safer made these recommendations today, June 17. Trainers use calks so the horse has better traction on the surface, and are usually used on an off track, however some trainers use them all the time. As a handicapper, I like to pay attention to shoe information. The committee has found some safety issues in regards to the use of calks and they could be on there way out. Other topics of discussion were regulating whip use and banning steroids. Bloodhorse story click
